ESB crews have restored power to thousands of homes which have been without electricity since yesterday.

A spokesperson said around 100 households are still without power.

The worst affected areas were in counties Kerry and Cork.

Gardaí have urged motorists to avoid the Sallygap in Wicklow if possible, as icy conditions have made the roads dangerous.

AA Roadwatch also warned motorists of icy conditions in counties Cork, Waterford and Kildare.

Roads in the north Kildare and south Meath areas are very icy, in particular the road from Summerhill to Kilcock which has frozen over in places.

This route should be avoided where possible as a number of vehicles have already left the road due to the conditions.

Drivers in Donegal are asked to avoid using secondary routes in Letterkenny which remain very icy.

All motorists are advised to reduce speed and drive with care.

Lightning hits Co Clare - twice

Several homes in the village of Crusheen, Co Clare, were evacuated this morning after lightning struck a tree and caused extensive damage.

The incident happened just before 10am.

At least ten homes were damaged when lightning apparently struck a metal barrier and then caused a large tree to disintegrate, sending debris in all directions.

Fire brigade personnel at the scene said the damage was the most extensive they had seen from a lightning strike.

2,000 without power in NI

It is understood that around 400 homes in Northern Ireland are still without electricity following yesterday's storms.

The majority of the 40,000 homes affected by the gales had power restored last night.

NIE says it is working to restore power to all its customers and is asking anyone with any problems to contact its helpline.

Those homes without electricity are thought to be mainly in the northeast.

Meanwhile police are urging motorists to be cautious when travelling as there is debris on many roads and driving conditions are dangerous.
