The latest figures from the Central Statistics Office show that employment in construction firms slumped by 20.2% in November 2008 compared to the same month in 2007.
The CSO says that the monthly employment index decreased from 99.8 in November 2007 to 79.6 in November 2008.
Numbers employed in the sector have been falling steadily since April 2007.
