Zero limit for learner drivers considered

Learner drivers - New restrictions proposed
Learner drivers - New restrictions proposed

The introduction of zero alcohol limits for learner and newly-qualified drivers is among proposals the public is being asked to consider as part of a new licensing system.

The eight-week consultation process is being launched by the Road Safety Authority.

The introduction of a Graduated Driver Licensing System is one of the cornerstones of the Government's road safety strategy.

The proposed measures include night-time driving restrictions for learner and newly-qualified drivers.

They also include restrictions on the number of passengers these drivers can carry and the power of the vehicle they can drive.

Increased penalty points and changes to the driving test are also being considered.

Following the public consultation and its own review, the RSA will make recommendations to the Minister for Transport.
