Abuse victims urged to seek counselling

A group which represents people who claim to have been abused by retired surgeon Michael Shine are appealing for anyone who needs counselling to come forward.

A spokesperson for the group, AIRE, said people had expressed concern following yesterday's report on RTÉ News.

Yesterday, the group urged the Minister for Health to set up an inquiry.

It wants an investigation into what went on in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

The group also wants the Medical Council to send details of its investigation of Mr Shine to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

77-year-old Michael Shine was struck off the register off medical practitioners late last year following an investigation by the medical counsel sickness practice committee.

It is understood the the counsel's investigation centred on allegations of sexual and indecent assault by Mr Shine on young male patients.
