Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan has said the Government will get spending under control and that no country has been getting economic forecasting right.
Speaking on RTÉ Radio's Morning Ireland, Mr Lenihan said Ireland must get away from thinking it is uniquely deprived in the world at large.
'The only thing we can do as a country and as a nation is to get our cost base right,' the minister said.
He said the country must work together 'whether it's in Tara Mines where we have workers and management in discussions about changes in work practices, [or] whether it's in Waterford Glass where the Government are looking at the position and will seek to intervene in any court proceedings if we can and if we can do anything to help'.
'We have to look at every sector of our economy and take whatever actions are necessary to safeguard jobs,' he said.
