Three earthquakes have jolted China's southwestern provinces, injuring 19 people and forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands more.

An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale struck early this morning local time, around 10km from Ruili, a town on the China-Myanmar border.

The quake destroyed the local government office building and prompted the evacuation of about 30,000 people.

Another tremor, with a magnitude of 4.3, shook Yiliang county a short time later.

The quake was centred near provincial capital Kunming. No casualties were reported, Xinhua news agency said.

A third 4.0 magnitude quake struck neighbouring Guizhou province at about 8pm local time.

China is still struggling to build housing and infrastructure for millions of people made homeless by the 12 May Sichuan earthquake which killed 80,000 people.
