Kilkenny - Fire at farmhouse
Kilkenny - Fire at farmhouse

Post mortem examinations have been carried out on the bodies of three members of the same family who died in a house fire in Co Kilkenny yesterday.

Sharon Whelan, 30, her seven-year-old daughter Zsara and two-year-old daughter Nadia died when a fire broke out at their rented farmhouse near the village of Wyndegap.

Gardaí are continuing an investigation into the deaths.

Emergency services got a call just after 9am on Christmas morning from a neighbour who noticed smoke coming out of the two-storey rented farmhouse a few kilometres from Windgap.

Firefighters got to the scene very quickly but the house was already ablaze.

The bodies of the three people who died were taken from the house.

It appears they died from smoke inhalation.

The bodies were recovered from the bedrooms where the mother and her children had been sleeping. They may have been overcome by carbon monoxide poisoning while they slept.
