Betty Cawley, who became a public voice for families bereaved by road deaths, has died from complications of injuries she sustained in a crash four years ago.

The 52-year-old Dublin woman took part in television adverts on behalf of the Road Safety Authority after her 22-year-old daughter Errin was killed in a collision on the M50 in November 2004.

The mother of three was also in that car when it was struck by a vehicle that had been travelling in the opposite direction and had crossed over the grass verge before colliding with the Cawley's car.

The driver of the other car was later jailed for four months for dangerous driving.

Ms cawley sustained very serious internal injuries as a result of the collision and had been in poor health ever since the crash.

She died on Saturday as a direct result of complications linked to injuries sustained in the crash.

The Road Safety Authority and gardaí have expressed their sympathies to the Cawley family and have praised Ms Cawley's great courage and bravery in speaking publicly about the tragedy her family has faced.
