The Master of the Coombe Maternity Hospital in Dublin has said there is an urgent need to rebuild or relocate the hospital, both in terms of patient safety and infrastructure.
Speaking at the launch of the Coombe's clinical report for 2007, Dr Chris Fitzpatrick also said last year was its busiest on record.
The perinatal mortality rate was 4.6 per 1000, the lowest rate ever recorded in the hospital.
It was also found that 3.9% of mothers attending the hospital were less than 20 year old - the lowest figure in seven years.
17% were smokers while three quarters of the mothers were from the Republic of Ireland.
A total of one third of the pregnancies were classed as unplanned.
The hospital revealed that 122 sets of twins and 4 sets of triplets were born during the period in question.
One in five of the pregnant women who attended were obese, and three out of every five had not taken pre-conceptual folic acid.
