Marine stations to escape closure

Valentia - Centre to remain operating
Valentia - Centre to remain operating

Transport Minister Noel Dempsey has decided to retain the Marine Rescue Co-ordination centres at both Malin in Co Donegal and Valentia in Co Kerry.

The third centre in Dublin will also remain.

The Government had considered having just one centre on the west coast but this was strongly resisted in Kerry and Donegal.

New communications equipment at cost of €2.5m will be installed in the three centres, beginning in Dublin in 2009.

Valentia and Malin will be upgraded in 2010.
