Labour stresses Ireland-Europe links

The Labour Party conference in Kilkenny has called for Ireland to remain at the heart of Europe, but said the decision of the Irish people on the Lisbon Treaty must be respected.

Party leader Eamon Gilmore also stressed that for Labour to succeed, it had to promote and maintain its distinct identity.

The final day of the conference was dominated by internal party affairs.

A report on how party structures should be reformed to make them more effective is to be finalised early next year, but delegates began discussing it today.

Drawing on the example of Barack Obama, Mr Gilmore said the party had to be in a better position to compete financially with the two big parties.

The report will also deal with the future relationship with unions and methods of candidate selection.

The conference also discussed international affairs, and the future of the Human Rights Commission, condemning Budget cutbacks which have hit that body.

Deputy Joe Costello said Labour respected the voters' decision on Lisbon, but said that the Treaty contained many of the values central to the party.

He also revealed that he had received a solicitor's letter from Libertas founder Declan Ganley, after making statements critical of him.
