A powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake has struck an area in the Sea of Okhotsk in Russia's far east.

The quake struck at around 9am Irish time.

The epicentre of the earthquake was located 314km west of of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, according to the US Geological Survey.
