20 Afghan civilians and a US soldier have been killed in a suicide attack in eastern Afghanistan.
The target of the attack was a convoy of US-led troops on a road outside Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province.
Up to 56 civilians were also wounded in the attack.
Elsewhere, two British Royal Marines with NATO's International Security Assistance Force were killed in an explosion in the south of the country in Helmand Province.
There are unconfirmed reports that one of the marines is a native of the Westport area of Co Mayo.
The Department of Foreign Affairs says that it has had no reports to confirm that one was Irish.
The latest casualties bring the number of foreign troops killed while under the command of NATO and US-led coalition forces this year to 258.
The British military death toll in Afghanistan and Iraq has hit 300.
The deaths bring the total killed in Afghanistan to 124, while 176 have died in Iraq.
