Former leader of the Progressive Democrats Mary Harney has said no one person is to blame for the downfall of the party.

On RTÉ This Week, Ms Harney said it would be wrong to blame Michael McDowell, but she said he could have chosen better the manner in which he announced his resignation as leader.

She said she would like to continue in office as Minister for Health after she becomes an independent TD.

PD members voted yesterday to disband the party after the leadership stated it was no longer politically viable to continue.

Meanwhile, former PD General Secretary John Higgins said he is sad and angry about the manner in which he left the party earlier this year.

Mr Higgins said relations with the leadership were 'strained' and there had been a failure to nurture or develop the grass roots of the party.

Yesterday, Mr Cowen said that all members of the PDs could be proud of their contribution to the democratic process, and the contribution that the party has made to the administrations in which they served.
