Quake hits Pacific 'Rim of Fire'

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 has hit the south Pacific island of Vanuatu.

There was no immediate tsunami warning or reports of casualties.

The quake struck at 6.19pm local time (7.19am Irish time), 320km north of the capital, Port Vila.

It was registered at a depth of 35km.

Two aftershocks with magnitudes of 5.4 and 5.3 struck roughly the same spot in the following half-hour.
