White House - Election opinion polls tighten
White House - Election opinion polls tighten

With four days to go until polling stations open, opinion polls have shown a slight tightening in the race for the White House.

US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama still leads in national polls but his lead over Republican candidate John McCain has fallen from eight points to six.

Many pollsters predicted this race would tighten as it entered its final stretch.

However, it took a long time for this to become apparent and Sen Obama still holds a solid lead over Sen McCain.

In the Real Clear Politics national poll average, Sen Obama's lead has slipped from eight points a week ago to six points today.

That lead varies greatly with The New York Times poll at one end giving him an 11-point lead while the George Washington University Poll gives him a lead of just three points.

The battleground state polls have also tightened. Sen Obama is ahead in Florida but by just 3.5 points.

In Ohio, he is ahead by almost six points and in Pennsylvania he is ahead by just under ten points.

Sen Obama campaigned in Iowa and Indiana today, while Sen McCain was on the campaign trail in Ohio where he was joined on stage by California Govenor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
