The Government has confirmed that the Christmas bonus will be paid this year to 1.3 million social welfare recipients.
The additional payment will cost over €200m.
The Minister for Social and Family Affairs, Mary Hanafin, said the Cabinet was concerned that vulnerable members of society should be protected in the economic downturn.
She said it was being announced now to allow recipients to plan their finances for Christmas.
