Severe weather conditions have affected a number of ferry sailings and made travelling conditions difficult in many parts of the country.

Today's Stena Line ferry sailings between Dún Laoghaire and Holyhead have been cancelled; the HSS Stena Explorer had been due to sail at 11.30 and 17.45.

Later departures from Dublin Port and Rosslare have not been affected.

Tonight's conventional ferry sailing between Dublin Port and Holyhead is due to go ahead as scheduled at 21.15.

Stena Line passengers will be accommodated on this sailing.

Irish Ferries have cancelled their Swift service from Dublin to Holyhead at 12.00 and 14.30.

Passengers will be accommodated on the cruise ferry sailing.

The high winds and heavy rain have made travelling conditions difficult in many parts of the country.

An apartment block in Sandyford in Dublin had part of its roof blown off and residents were evacuated.

Met Éireann says high winds will strengthen to storm force in some sea areas this evening and tonight, before moderating. There is also a warning of some local flooding.

The Foyle Bridge in Derry has been closed to high sided vechicles because of the strong winds, although other traffic is not affected.
