Bank holiday road campaign begins

Garda checkpoints - Greater Dublin area
Garda checkpoints - Greater Dublin area

Excessive speed, drink driving and non-wearing of seat belts are to be targeted by a major garda operation in the greater Dublin area this bank holiday weekend.

From today until Monday, checkpoints will be placed at locations throughout the city, operating mandatory alcohol testing and checking for breaches of road traffic laws.

23 people have already lost their lives on roads in the Dublin area this year, down from last year's figure of 30.

Officers will also carry out random breath tests at checkpoints across the country.

238 people have been killed on Irish roads so far this year - six of these last weekend alone.

Gardaí are also warning that tiredness is a factor in many road crashes.

In a bid to combat driver fatigue, Topaz service stations are giving away 20,000 free cups of tea and coffee today to encourage drivers to stay alert behind the wheel.
