The Taoiseach has joined a trade mission to China, including representatives of nearly 100 Irish companies and organisations.
Brian Cowen said the aim of the trade mission is to develop and further enhance the significant commercial relationship between the two countries.
During his visit the Taoiseach will meet the Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao and also speak at the Asia-Europe Summit in Beijing.
The Taoiseach had been due to travel on Sunday but postponed his departure to deal the medical card controversy.
