Two teachers unions have called on members and school communities to take part in a protest outside the Dáil next Wednesday evening.

The protest, against budget cutbacks, is to coincide with a Labour party Dáil motion on class size.

The INTO and the ASTI have also asked teachers and parents to lobby TDs and councillors in the run up to next Wednesday.

The Joint Managerial Body, which represents managers of religious run secondary schools, has said it will also be supporting the protest.

Earlier, Minister for Education Batt O'Keeffe said he will not row back on the decision to increase class sizes announced in the Budget.

Speaking in Shanghai, he said the Government had made a collective decision after going through all the elements of the Budget.

He said the country is facing into a serious financial situation that has to be addressed.

Mr O'Keeffe said he understands the commitment by teachers to reducing class sizes and shares their concern and empathises with them.

He called on teachers and teachers' unions to enter into a partnership with Government.

The Minister called on them to accept that there is going to be pain, but if they work together it will be in the interest of those children in the classroom.

The Labour Party has indicated that it will try to push education cuts and class sizes to the top of the political agenda next week.

It has said that next week's private members' debate will focus on education cuts and specifically class sizes.
