Major European stock markets closed with gains of 3% to 5% today despite persistent fears for the health of the global economy.

The London FTSE 100 index surged 5.22% to 4,063 while in Paris the CAC 40 added 4.68% to end the day at 3,330.

The Frankfurt Dax finished 3.43% in positive territory at 4,781.

Dublin's ISEQ ended down seven points at 2,720, led by building stocks after more warnings after more gloomy predictions about the housing market.

Wall Street has seen a choppy session so far today.

Earlier, Japanese share prices closed 2.78% higher, clawing back some of the previous day's loss of over 11%, which was the biggest drop in two decades.
