University teachers reluctantly back pay deal

Pay deal - IFUT back agreement
Pay deal - IFUT back agreement

The federation representing university teachers is ‘with reluctance’ recommending a Yes vote for the new national pay agreement.

The Irish Federation of University Teachers voted in favour of the deal at a meeting of the organisation's Executive in Dublin yesterday.

The Federation said it made the recommendation in view of the importance of providing certainty for education and students as well as the broader economy in the current critical economic climate.

IFUT General Secretary Mike Jennings said the Federation will use the clause of the agreement, which provides for a total review of the benchmarking process, as a mechanism to pursue productivity claims in recognition of additional workload taken on by university staff over the past decade.

He added that the Federation expects that the government will respond positively when current economic difficulties have been overcome.
