Seven Russian soldiers have been killed and seven others wounded after a car filled with explosives blew up near their base in Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia.

The Russian defence ministry said it viewed the incident as a terrorist attack aimed at undermining a ceasefire agreement between the two sides.

Georgia said Russia organised the explosion as a pretext to delay withdrawing troops from South Ossetia.
