The meeting to decide the fate of the Progressive Democrats, which was expected to be held next month, will not now take place until November.
Last week the party leadership recommended that it be wound up and that a special conference be convened to debate the issue.
That conference was expected to take place in October but the party's national executive decided last night to put the meeting off because of logistical reasons.
No decision was taken on the form of the motion that members will discuss.
