The Minister for Foreign Affairs has assured the Palestinian President of Ireland's continued support for the Arab-Israeli peace process.

Speaking after talks with President Mahmoud Abbas in Dublin this morning, Micheál Martin said that Ireland would work with any new administration in Washington to make the peace process a number one priority.

The Palestinian President acknowledged that it is a difficult time with transitions in the Israeli and US administrations.

However, Mr Abbas said that he is working to make sure that what has been achieved can be irreversible and that the agreement will be continued by all concerned parties.

He said his strategic option continues to be the peace process and he really believes it is possible to achieve a two-state solution.

Mr Abbas extended his appreciation to the Irish people for their continued economic and political support in a time of what he described as 'dire circumstances' for his people.
