Harney meets cancer widower

Karl Henry - Seeking independent review
Karl Henry - Seeking independent review

Karl Henry, whose wife died after her breast cancer was misdiagnosed, has described a meeting with the Minister of Health as positive.

He said that while the minister had not given any commitment at this stage, he remained hopeful of a good outcome to his request for an independent review of the case.

The meeting lasted 90 minutes.

On Friday, Mr Henry will meet with the Chief Executive of the Health Information and Quality Authority to discuss the case.

Mr Henry is seeking an independent review of the care of the late Ann Moriarty and a look back to ensure other women have no reason for concern.

Yesterday evening, he was given a copy of a Health Service Executive-commissioned review of the case by members of the breast care team at University College Hospital in Galway, after seeking access to the document.

In June 2007, an X-ray on 53-year-old Mrs Moriarty was misread at Ennis General Hospital and, according to the HSE, 'a radiologist failed to identify something highly suggestive of a metastatic lesion'.

Two months later, she attended the hospital's accident and emergency department, where another X-ray was performed and she was discharged with a prescription for an upset stomach.

In mid-August, she attended the private Galway Clinic for a second opinion, where cancer was found to have spread to a number of organs.

Mrs Moriarty died in April this year.

It has also been confirmed that a mammogram taken in April 2007 at St James's Hospital in Dublin, which she attended for regular check-ups, is missing.
