Progressive Democrat TD Noel Grealish has described press speculation about his political future as speculative and inaccurate.

In a statement, Mr Grealish said he understood that the PDs' National Executive last night undertook to conduct a root and branch review of the future of the party.

The Galway West TD said he intended to consult his constituency membership, his parliamentary colleagues and the wider party membership as part of this review.

Mr Grealish added that in the meantime he remained a member of the PD parliamentary party.

Meanwhile, Minister for Health and former leader of the PDs Mary Harney said she would not live in an 'Alice in Wonderland' situation with regard to the future of the party.

Ms Harney said realism was important and if the PDs cannot elect to Dáil Éireann it is a huge issue for the viability and sustainability of the party.

Ms Harney said members have to be realistic about their assessment of the party.

TD remains 'active member': Cannon

She said she would love to think the party had a long-term future but critical factors had to be applied in deciding the future of the organisation.

Ms Harney said reform of the party is an awesome task and she would not speculate on her future within it.

Last night, party leader Ciaran Cannon said Mr Grealish remained a fully active member of the party.

Senator Cannon spoke to the Galway West TD just after midnight and said Mr Grealish assured him he will only reveal his future plans to members of the parliamentary party.
