Police in North Belfast have called off their search for what is believed to be a lion until morning.

The animal was spotted near the Cavehill country park, not far from Belfast Zoo.

Police were been called to the scene and warned members of the public to avoid the area.

A police helicopter was involved in the search.

Police are describing the animal which was spotted as a sandy coloured non-domestic type animal.

There is no evidence yet that there is any connection with Belfast Zoo.

A PSNI spokesman said: ‘We are taking this seriously, there have been a string of calls about sightings.’

A statement from police headquarters said: ‘Police in North Belfast are warning the public to be aware of sightings of what appears to be a lion in the Upper Hightown end of Cavehill Park.

‘Police are currently responding to the incident and would urge the public to avoid the area.

‘Anyone who thinks they may have seen the animal should not attempt to approach it.’
