An earthquake hit southwest China's Sichuan province destroying homes and killing three people.

The epicentre of the quake was about 30km southeast of Panzhihua, near the border with Yunnan province, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake was about 10km deep.

The US Geological Survey put the magnitude at 5.7 and China's official Xinhua news agency said it measured 6.1 on the Richter scale.

Parts of Sichuan province were devastated by an earthquake on 12 May.

The province has struggled to rebuild in the aftermath of the disaster that killed about 70,000 and left 10 million homeless.
