Mayo - Protests over gas pipeline

A lobster fisherman is in an ongoing confrontation with contractors working on the Corrib gas pipeline off the Mayo coast.

Pat O'Donnell is opposing plans by Shell and its partner companies to bring gas from the Corrib Field onshore at Glengad in Broadhaven Bay.

In a statement this morning Mr O'Donnell called on the Government to stop the work that is now in progress at Glengad and to protect his right to fish in the area.

Meanwhile, eight men, who were arrested near the site of the Corrib gas pipeline yesterday morning have been released without charge.

The men allegedly interfered with operations on the site.

Gardaí from the water unit arrested them at Glengad beach as they kayaked, surfed and swam along the shore where the gas line is to be laid.

A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
