Connemara - Two men die in car crash

Two men have been killed in a road accident in Connemara in Co Galway.

Both are believed to be French tourists.

Two women who were back seat passengers in the car were injured in the crash and have been taken to hospital.

The single vehicle accident occurred in Lettergeish around 3km from Tully Cross in north Connemara.

The car in which the four people were travelling went off the road shortly after midday and plunged down an embankment into a river.

It is believed the four holidaymakers were driving to a well-known beach when the accident occurred.

Local residents rushed to the scene and removed all four from the overturned car.

Efforts to revive the driver and a front seat passenger failed but the two women were airlifted to hospital by helicopter and tonight are said to be in a stable condition.

Gardaí say one of the men who died was in his late 40s the other was in his 60s.

Weather conditions in the area at the time were described as bad, with heavy rainfall and mist.

Gardaí in Clifden are appealing to anybody who was in the area at the time to contact them.
