A six-year-old boy from Northern Ireland has died while on holiday with his family in Portugal.

Nathan Sharkey, from Claudy in Co Derry, drowned yesterday at a resort in the Algarve.

Neighbours and friends in the family's home village say they are shocked by news of the tragedy.

Local SDLP councillor Brenda Stevenson said the death was a huge loss to the local community and described Nathan Sharkey as a 'bright, bubbly and lovely boy.'

No further information is immediately available, but the British Foreign Office is understood to be providing assistance to the boy's parents.
