There has been a dramatic increase in the volume and severity of child pornography on the Internet.

The ISPAI, which represents Internet Service Providers in Ireland, received over 800 reports of illegal material on the Internet last year.

Of these, the vast majority related to child pornography, which increased by 62% on 2006.

718 of those related to child abuse the others included incidents of child grooming, racism and financial scams.

The organisation's report also says computer analysts are seeing more extreme and explicit photos and videos of child abuse and more frequently than in previous years.

The organisation found that the vast majority of the photos and images of child abuse came from the USA and Russia, but while none of them were hosted in Ireland it does not mean that such images are not being uploaded from here in a private capacity.

The ISPAI says it can only react to reports it receives and cannot police the Internet.

Gardaí need a telecommunications order before they can investigate people in ireland who are suspected of involvement in such Internet crime.
