Thousands of people in two European cities have been evacuated after unexploded bombs from World War II were found in consecutive days.
About 5,000 people were evacuated in the Wilmersdorf area of Berlin overnight after a 500kg British bomb was unearthed by construction workers.
The bomb’s detonator was still intact.
Residents were taken to shelters overnight, two petrol stations were shuttered and traffic on adjacent roads and a stretch of the autobahn was rerouted.
Explosives experts took the bomb to a nearby park to be defused.
And up to 10,000 people were evacuated from a residential area close to the centre of Budapest yesterday after an unexploded bomb was found at a building site.
A number of high-rise apartment blocks within a 1km radius of the site had to be evacuated and all traffic was diverted following the discovery of the 500kg US bomb.
More than 400 policemen, 70 civil militia men and 25 Red Cross volunteers took part in the operation in Angyalfold district.
A bomb disposal unit defused the weapon late last night.
Two unexploded World War II US bombs were discovered in the city last May. They were transported to a secure site and destroyed there.
