French President Nicolas Sarkozy is likely to hold an informal meeting with representatives of both sides of the Lisbon Treaty debate during a short visit to Dublin on Monday.

Mr Sarkozy generated controversy when he said two days ago that Ireland must hold another referendum.

He made the comment at a private meeting of his parliamentary party, in remarks which were later confirmed by one of his officials.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen, who played down the significance of Mr Sarkozy's remarks, is continuing his visit to New York, fulfilling a series of engagements with leaders of the city's political and business communities.
