Cork University Hospital says there is no evidence that patient care has been compromised and all cases involving Dr C have been referred to an independent labatory in the UK.
Nollaig Parfrey, Professor of Pathology at CUH, said two consultant cytopathologists reviewed every case worked on by Dr C.
He said while there were some differences of opinion in cervical smear diagnoses, they are satisfied that there is no cause for concern and no patient's care was compromised in any way.
Prof Parfrey said all appropiate checks took place before Dr C was employed at the hospital, including his registration with the Irish Medical Council.
He said references were taken up with Dr C's previous employers and he was recommended to the hospital as 'a safe cytopathologist'.
He said concerns were raised about Dr C from staff within the hospital itself and around the same time, they were informed about problems that had arisen in University Hospital Galway.
