Investment fund - Questions over links to Zimbabwe

Claims that some of the National Pension Reserve Fund has been invested in companies with links to Zimbabwe are to be investigated.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin says Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan is now examining the issue.

It has been claimed that the fund has invested upwards of €550m in 14 companies that work out of Zimbabwe, including Nestlé and Barclays Bank.

The minister told the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs Committee there are no proposals currently to address the issue despite calls on the reserve fund to divest from these investments.

Mr Martin said the Government would not want to indirectly prop up the regime in Zimbabwe and any 'mechanisms' that would prevent this should be explored.
