Stranded holidaymakers to be flown home

Over 250 Irish people, stranded in Cyprus after tour operator Fáilte Travel suddenly went out of business, will be brought home tonight.

The holidaymakers were stranded on the island when Fáilte Travel stopped its flights, after announcing yesterday that it was to cease trading with immediate effect.

It is understood around 3,000 customers had been booked to take holidays through the operator over the next few weeks.

Several groups of passengers arrived at Dublin Airport this morning hoping to travel to Cyprus at 10.15am, among them a wedding party.

Alternative arrangements are being made for those passengers.

The Commission for Aviation Regulation has been working to try to get the group already in Cyprus back to Ireland after two flights were cancelled yesterday.

The commission expects the stranded passengers to leave 20.30 local time and arrive in Dublin around 2.30am.

It said refunds will be given and has urged travellers to keep their receipts.

Meanwhile, the Irish Aviation Authority has said there are now only minor delays at peak times at Dublin Airport following the failure of the radar system earlier this week, which led to long delays for thousands of passengers.

The authority also said that no major delays were anticipated tomorrow.
