Members of the Irish Road Haulage Association have again deferred a decision on whether to stage blockades over high fuel costs.
At a meeting in Portlaoise last night, truck drivers were told that some progress had been made in talks with officials from the Department of Transport.
A decision on action was deferred until early September to allow talks to progress.
Last week, the IRHA said there was a huge amount of work to be done if protests against spiralling fuel prices were to be averted.
Hauliers said they had received a commitment that there will be a clampdown on illegal operators.
They were also promised that the Government would lobby in Europe for reduced fuel tariffs for the industry.
In recent weeks, hauliers in several European countries have been involved in blockades and protests against cost increases.
