The Government and the Defence Forces have offered their condolences to the family of a young soldier who was killed in an accident while on holiday in Pamplona in northern Spain yesterday.
23-year-old Private Aidan Holly, a native of Tarbert, Co Kerry, died after falling from a 30m high wall, according to officials.
In a joint statement, Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea and Defence Forces Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Dermot Earley, said the thoughts of all members of the Defence Forces were with the Holly family.
Private Holly joined the Defence Forces in July last year and was based in the 4th Battalion in Collins Barracks, Cork.
He was attending the first day of the San Fermin festival, Spain's most famous running of the bulls, when it is understood that he fell from a wall in the centre of the town.
Identification was made possible after local police found an Irish bank card among his belongings.
It is believed that Mr Holly was dead for several hours before his body was found yesterday. Earlier, Spanish authorities said they wanted to speak to his travelling companion.
Editor's Note: Earlier today, we erroneously reported that this was the Aidan Holly who played for the Tarbert GAA team in 1999. We apologise for this mistake.
