The oil company Royal Dutch Shell is believed to be considering pulling out of Zimbabwe.

An unnamed source at the global firm, which is headquartered in the Netherlands, told the UK Observer the company was 'actively looking for a new solution'.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said last month that businesses which are helping the Harare regime should 'reconsider their positions.'

South African President Thabo Mbeki met Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe yesterday to try to help end the political crisis.

The main opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change, said its leader Morgan Tsvangirai had declined to meet Mr Mbeki, who has tried to mediate between the two sides.

Mr Tsvangirai and his party has criticised the mediation efforts, accusing Mr Mbeki of siding with Mr Mugabe and have asked the African Union to send an envoy to help with the talks.
