Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan has said that savings in public expenditure, which are to be announced next week, will not be a 'mini Budget'.
Speaking on his way into a conference in Dublin on financial regulation, Brian Lenihan said he is currently having detailed discussions with Cabinet Ministers about the savings to be announced next week.
The final decision, he added, would be taken by the Cabinet on Tuesday.
The measures to be announced would not be akin to a budget, Mr Lenihan said, as there would be no changes to taxation.
The changes will simply ensure that we live within the projected expenditure allocations for this year, he claimed.
He also said that we have to make a start on curbing current expenditure, to ensure that the essential capital projects can be prioritised.
The conference was also addressed by current EU Commissioner and former Minister for Finance Charlie McCreevy.
Asked by journalists to respond to opposition party claims that the current and former Fianna Fáil-led governments are responsible for difficulties in the Irish economy, Mr McCreevy said he believed he had adequately defended his stewardship of the Irish economy during his time as Minister for Finance.
