Hauliers defer decision on action

The Irish Road Haulage Association has decided to postpone for two weeks a decision on taking action to highlight the impact of the fuel crisis on the sector.

President of the IRHA said the two weeks would allow companies who had not engaged with hauliers over spiralling fuel costs to 'come to the table'.

Jimmy Quinn added that those who did not were playing fast and loose with the Irish economy.

He was speaking after a two and a half hour meeting in Portlaoise yesterday evening. The IRHA council met to discuss its campaign to have the Government intervene to reduce the price of fuel.

The association met with Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey on Thursday but were told that the Government could not deliver cuts in excise duties on fuel.

At the last meeting of the IRHA's council earlier this month, some hauliers called for a blockade to highlight the financial difficulties of its members.
