International community failing Iraqi refugees

A new report by Amnesty International says the international community is failing in its responsibility toward refugees from Iraq.

The rights group says Syria and Jordan have now resorted to restricting entry and deporting people, partly due to the lack of support from the international community.

The two countries have, up until now, shouldered most of the refugee influx since the invasion in 2003.

Amnesty says other governments are justifying their hardline stance by citing supposed improvements in the security situation in Iraq.

The rights group is calling on all states, especially those in Europe, to stop the forcible return of refugees to Iraq because they say it is not safe to do so.

According to the latest estimates from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, some 4.7m Iraqis have fled their homes.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International's Irish section is launching an Online Action Centre at Wellington Quay this morning.

The service will enable people to sign their names to petitions, send letters to governments, or show support for a particular campaign on its webpage.
