Fishermen have decided to call off their port blockades to give the Government an opportunity to deliver on an undertaking to get aid from the EU.
Fishermen say this aid is needed to deal with financial hardship and the crisis in the fishing industry.
The move will give the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith, and Minister of State, Tony Killeen, a chance to deliver on their promise of aid made yesterday.
The decision was reached after a five-hour meeting in Athlone.
The chairman of the Federation of Fishermen, Michael Walsh, said the industry needed ministers who would give it positive support and take action to help fisherman.
The Federation of Fishermen, the Minister for Agriculture and the Junior Minister for Fisheries held a nine-hour meeting yesterday.
Minister Smith said he would discuss what has been described as a crisis in the Irish fishing industry with Commissioner Jo Borg in Brussels next Wednesday.
