Motoring - More young people taking out car insurance

Motor insurance premiums have reduced significantly for young people in recent years.

A report published by the Department of Transport shows more 17- to 24-year-olds are taking out motor insurance than ever before.

The report by outside consultants found no evidence that young drivers were not benefitting the same as any other age group from reduced premiums

During the period 2002 to 2005, the average price paid for insurance fell by 19% below the 2000 level, and young drivers enjoyed the greatest decreases.

The number of 17- to 24-year-olds taking out car insurance increased by 63% during this time, when there was actually a net decrease in the population of this age group.

Young drivers are also more likely now to take out the more expensive comprehensive insurance, rather than third party fire and theft.
