Figures released this evening show that 425 people were arrested on suspicion of drink driving in the seven day period from Monday 26 May to Sunday 1 June.
This compares to 349 such incidents in the previous week.
The period of 26 May to 1 June partly covers the June Bank Holiday weekend.
Whether the higher detection rate is due to more people drinking and driving over the holiday period, or greater garda detection rates, or both is unclear.
But the figures show that hundreds of people are still being caught for suspected drink driving.
