European Union nations have approved common rules for expelling illegal immigrants, but the move still has to be approved in the EU parliament.
The agreement was sealed by the 27 EU interior ministers at a meeting in Luxembourg, the EU’s Slovenian presidency announced, and is expected to be passed by the European Parliament at its session in Strasbourg between 16 and 19 June.
The new measures will oblige national authorities to choose between issuing residency or other permits to illegal immigrants and returning them to their countries of origin.
