Seventy jobs are to be lost as internet security company Symantec confirmed plans to move operations from its Dublin plant to the Czech Republic.

The move to the Czech Republic will see 40 initial job losses by the end of October, with another 30 posts expected to be cut in the first half of next year.

A total of 1,190 people are employed by the company, which set up in Dublin in 1991.

However, the company, based in Ballycoolin in Blanchardstown, also said it had outsourced a new contract for telephone sales to Dublin based ServiceSource, which will create 45 new jobs in the Cherrywood-based company.

Dominic Cook, Symantec Spokesperson, said the vast majority of the workforce in Ireland will not be affected by this transfer to the Czech Republic.

He also said the management team for the new manufacturing operations in the Czech Republic will continue to be based in Dublin.
